Modern Ecological Agriculture
Agricultural development in Indonesia is directed towards sustainable agriculture development as part of the implementation of sustainable development. Sustainable agricultural development (including rural development) is an important strategic issue of concern and discussion in all countries today. Sustainable agriculture development in addition to be a destination, but also has become a paradigm of agricultural development patterns.
Problems and dilemmas in food production, related with enormous population and declining environmental quality. The increase in population forces the government to increase food production on relatively small and even diminished agricultural land, which means the use of high amounts of agrochemical inputs, which have an impact on environmental pollution and the decline of sustainability of agricultural production systems. On the other hand, with the increasing public awareness of safe food consumption, under conditions that farmers are not yet ready to produce, will cause Indonesia becomes an open market for certified products of quality assurance and safe consumption from other countries. The problem we face is, can growing food needs that require the support of high-dose agrochemical inputs, harmonized with safe products of consumption and environmental conservation to achieve sustainable production. The answer should certainly be, as long as there is active participation between producers (farmers), traders, and consumers and each party is accountable for achieving that goal.
Considering the condition and characteristics of Indonesian crops farmers, where most of the field operators are not the land owners, expecting farmers to voluntarily conservatively ecologically-conserved farming on the basis of consciousness seems very difficult. Advocacy through counseling, like the case for technology adoption, seems to suggest conservative ecological farming will not go smoothly. Therefore, it is necessary to find a way persuasive and educative, which requires the implementation without harming the farmers. Provisions related to farmers’ rights, or related to economic incentives, are expected to be effective in introducing environmental conservation measures and the quality of agricultural land resources.
There are many scopes for ecological-conservative agriculture requirements, then formulation agreements are required with due regard to the priorities, operations, and capabilities of farmer farmers. The concept of ecologically-conservative agriculture toward sustainable production systems is available, but the operational formula needs to be agreed upon by various stakeholder members. In addition, there is a production certification system which is one of the ways of enforcing ecological-conservative agriculture, in addition to the security objectives of crop consumption. The production process certification system is a win-win solution between consumer-trader-farmers, in environmental conservation and land resources. Ecological-conservative agriculture to maintain the sustainability of production, is a necessity in the national production system and economy.
